Recollections of the Civil War

With the Leader at Washington and in the Field in the Sixties.

Mr. Dana wrote these Recollections of the civil war according to a purpose which he had entertained for several years. They were completed only a few months before his death on October 17, 1897. A large part of the narrative has been published serially in McClure's Magazine. In the chapter about Abraham Lincoln and the Lincoln Cabinet Mr. Dana has drawn from a lecture which he delivered in 1896 before the New Haven Colony Historical Society. The incident of the self-wounded spy, in the chapter relating to the secret service of the war, was first printed in the North American Review for August, 1891. A few of the anecdotes about Mr. Lincoln which appear in this book were told by Mr. Dana originally in a brief contribution to a volume entitled Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln by Distinguished Men of his Time, edited by the late Allen Thorndike Rice, and published in 1886.

Although Mr. Dana was in one sense the least reminiscent of men, living actively in the present, and always more interested in to-morrow than in yesterday, and although it was his characteristic habit to toss into the wastebasket documents for history which many persons would have treasured, he found in the preparation of the following chapters abundant material wherewith to stimulate and confirm his own memory, in the form of his official and unofficial reports written at the front for the information of Mr. Stanton and Mr. Lincoln, and private letters to members of his family and intimate friends.

Charles Anderson Dana was forty-four years old when his appointment as Assistant Secretary of War put him behind the scenes of the great drama then enacting, and brought him into personal relations with the conspicuous civilians and soldiers of the war period. Born in New Hampshire on August 8, 1819, he had passed by way of western New York, Harvard College, and Brook Farm into the profession which he loved and in which he labored almost to the last day of his life. When Secretary Stanton called him to Washington he had been engaged for nearly fifteen years in the management of the New York Tribune, the journal most powerful at that time in solidifying Northern sentiment for the crisis that was to come. When the war was over and the Union preserved, he returned at once to journalism. His career subsequently as the editor of The Sun for thirty years is familiar to most Americans.

It is proper to note the circumstance that the three years covered by Mr. Dana's Recollections as here recorded constitute the only term during which he held any public office, and the only break in more than half a century of continuous experience in the making of newspapers. His connection with the Government during those momentous years is an episode in the story of a life that throbbed from boyhood to age with intellectual energy, and was crowded with practical achievement.

Recollections of the Civil War eBook Charles A Dana

Hard to believe Recollections was written years after the Civil War ended in 1865--and "ghosted" by Ida Tarbell, mostly known for her monopoly-busting writings. Dana was one of very few "on-the-scene" scribes who gained favor with Northern generals, mainly U>S> Grant. Another rather interesting point is that Dana was appointed Assistant Secretary of War by Edwin Stanton which gave him entry into just about anywhere war-like conditions existed. He covered both Grant's Vicksburg campaign and his Overland campaign which led to ending the war after some 4plus years. Jefferson Davis' imprisonment was another interesting side note. All-in-all and excellent read, highly recommended.

Recollections of the Civil War eBook Charles A Dana Reviews

I liked Charles Dana's book. It is breezy and topical, not detailed or exhaustive. But it does its job well.
Mr. Dana had a uniqe perspective on the Civil War. First enlisted to go "out West" and check out "this General Grant" by Edwin Stanton, Dana soon became a trusted advisor to both the President and the Secretary of War. He apparently spent most of his war service in the field, at the side of various union generals so that Washington would have a trusted and immediate voice to report on what was really happening on the various fronts. His advice helped advance officers Dana thought effective and cashire those whose service was detrimental to the cause of the Union. His advice and counsel was also influential on various war policy issues.
One belives that Dana had much to do in helping Grant, Sherman and others overcome their reputations and distance from Washington to reach their appointed places from where Union success ultimately sprung. He is a concise writer and offers strong opinions on personalities associated with the Union's management and prosecution of the war. These are interesting because Dana is often quoted in more recent books on the war. His story helps show why these quotes are meaningful as well as tells an interesting tale of an individual who can best be described as the highest ranking civilian in the field from 1863-1865.
An interesting book from a unique vantage point.
Charles Dana is normally just a side bar in most history of General Grant. It is interesting to see what part he played in the war.
A good perspective from the view of someone working in the war department. Quick insights but not apt of facts or figures.
Excellent analysis of tactics and characters, by the Secretary of War's personal representative to the Union armies , Charles A. Dana.
It is great that someone was able to have written such a history of things that happened during the war and to clear up some of the things that really went on
Unique perspective on the Union command system in the last year of the civil war. Dana, being somewhat unbiased, was able to offer opinions that provided a more broad interpretation of decisions made by Grant and his commanders. Good read and necessary for anyone's library on the war.
Mr. Dana was a clear and concise writer very modern in tone, He was well placed,an eye witness to important events, from a vantage point at the top level of of the US administration, and on the ground as an investigator. I especially like his coverage of the siege of Vicksburg and his picture of U S Grant.
