The Widow Business A Survival Guide Vera Martignetti 9781604943368 Books

The Widow Business shares the intimacy of dealing with the death of a life partner. But lest one think that Martignetti's story is all grief and sadness, think again: Yes, the pain and frustration associated with the process of death are here, but they share space with the amusing anecdotes attendant to forty-seven years of marriage and the enlightening discoveries Martignetti makes about herself during her first year as an "I" rather than part of a "We."

The diminutive size of this engaging book is deceiving for it packs a punch. The candor with which Martignetti approaches her subject is refreshing, entertaining, and inspiring. In her own inimitable way--a little sassy at times, rather business like at others--she makes the reader sit up and take note of the inevitability not only of death but also of the important and petty daily tasks and mental readjustments that the loss of a spouse engenders. As she learns, so do we.

And just in case one misses some of the many pertinent observations embedded throughout Martignetti's entertaining descriptions of her experiences, she has thoughtfully added an epilogue--Plan A--as a final reminder of necessary tasks to be performed today by tomorrow's widows and widowers.

The Widow Business A Survival Guide Vera Martignetti 9781604943368 Books Reviews

I picked up this book several months ago on the recommendation of a friend, and the thing is, I'm not a widow. Yet this book was a great eye-opener for the things we don't think of or plan for, or even discuss. I'll admit to tearing-up as Martignetti takes us through her loss and describes how she struggled to get her life under control after her husband died. But she does so with ease and humor and affection, making this a poignant lesson on how to survive the loss of a spouse.
This was more than a book about losing ones life partner; it was a tender and realistic love story about the paths couples traverse through life together. What makes A Widow's Business a human story is that Martignetti doesn't paint a rosy path of their 40 year relationship; but one of the trials and tribulations most couples face while living a lifetime together. Yet she does this all succinctly in just over one hundred pages.

How they both went through the process of her husband's illness as they faced his eminent death together, how she dealt with the loss of her lifelong partner as she takes you back through the early years of their courtship, raising their four children together, her struggles of a woman's role as it changes over time and its effect on their marriage, and lastly her sensitive yet humorous guidance to others is more than a story of grace.

Because Martignetti's story is real and identifiable her losses, struggles, and triumphs are the more heartfelt. I cried, I laughed, and saw my own relationship struggles in this poignant story. Being a widow is not my personal experience; but Martignetti has provided us all with a well thought out guide if it were to become ones' reality...the humorous, touching, and nostalgic love story was a real bonus. A lovely book for book clubs to discuss.

I thought Joan Didion's book "A Year of Magical Thinking" was touching, but if Martignetti was a well known as Didion this would be on the bestseller list!

Good book...very interesting.....
very informative.......
Gave a good look at being a widow.....
Would recomend it to anyone.
What a relief to read a book that seems like the author is speaking to/about me and what I'm going through. It and gives one hope that it's not easy but you'll make it through a very difficult time. Even when prepared, we're not prepared.
A beautiful, tender, and at times a humorous account of the first year without one's best friend and partner. An easy read, Vera says it all as it is. Plus the Epilogue gives practical suggestions on how to handle the demands you encounter when it's all in you hands. A treasure!
This is a wonderful book filled with poignant remembrances and wry humor. It tells the story of the author's evolving widowhood, month by month, over the first year. What makes it different from other memoirs about loss is it's emphasis on the pragmatic. Martignetti realizes that many bereaved spouses may not have the practical and financial information they need to carry on alone, and that the time to get ready for this is now. I only wish the book was longer and that we could have gotten to know Vera and her family better. I loved this book, and as a licensed therapist I would recommend it to grieving patients.
Most of us really don't prepare for the loss of a spouse, and we are often left overwhelmed and confused by our feelings, and bewildered by the challenges of becoming the one totally responsible for finances - and other decisions. In The Widow Business, Martignetti addresses all sort of relevant issues.....She takes us on a monthly emotional tour of her reactions to the loss of her husband....There is sadness, clarity, surprising humor, and insight about how our feelings can surprise us.
In addition to helping the reader understand that many feelings of grief are universal, and not predictable, Martignetti does the most practical thing of all and at the end of the book includes Part A -which provides a complete reference regarding finances, legal and other details. This information, concisely compiled, is extremely useful, and will help each reader as she or he adjusts to living life as an individual and not part of a team.

After reading this book you will understand what assistance it can provide!
