Very, very good read. Obviously, as the writer is a cop, all his books are very pro-police, with the heroes all retired/active cops. It does get a little old at times, as the only people with the slightest clue seem to be the police in his stories. I didn't like how the main protagonist in this book - the 70 year old retired US marshal - seems to be near super human, able to outfight a young, tough criminal a third of his age, and even a highly trained special forces type in peak physical condition with years of training. I get the point that McKinney is trying to make: the grizzled old veteran teaching the young whippersnappers a thing or two. But enough is enough, and you have to leave SOME kind of realism in it. That being said, the marshal is created to still be rather likable, without being arrogant, but yet borders the line of being too perfect. The idea of a group of senior citizens is a very new, fresh take on a zombie survival story. We always read about people from middle aged to pre-teens in stories, with one or two older people thrown into the mix. To have a main group of characters be all over 65, and see how they survive is a different and interesting twist on what can be a repetitive tale.
However.......The religious leader who forms the compound seems a DIRECT copy of Jim Jones and the peoples temple. From his description: aviator sunglasses always on, to the hidden homosexuality, to the compound, the shootings of the delegates, and forced mass suicide of all his followers are damn near word for word Jonestown. If you've ever seen the documentary on Jones on the history or discovery channel, you'll see what I mean. It is almost an EXACT copy of the Jonestown story, and I would have liked it to be at least a little different.
Besides those points, the story is very well written. It starts off a little like World War Z, in that there are several different stories all going on simultaneously, but in this book they all converge and become one main plot. It is interesting, keeps your attention, and makes you want to find out the next turn and twist.
All in all, a very good read, and a highly recommended addition to your zombie library. I just wish McKinney would stray from the 'super cop' that is always present, and some originality in the Jim Jones connections would have been better.

I enjoy the fact that you can enter this series anywhere and not be lost. Each book is it's own separate story - giving you a look into the disaster from a slightly different perspective. Some characters move from book to book but you are never lost. This one is well written and outstanding character development. Read this series.
I had never read any of Joe McKinney's books so I didn't quite know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised as I began to read. I am still reading the book but I'm almost done and have found a great story of survival where people find what they're really made of as the very existence of the human race is threatened. Mr McKinney does a good job of character building for each member of his ensemble of survivors. Thank you for a great read.

After reading City of the Dead naturally I had to get this one. What happened to me though was that I bought the mass paperback version before I received my . Well, now that I have fallen in love with my kindle I couldn't sit there under the covers fumbling through this paperback. I was enjoying it so much that I went and purchased the edition as well! And well worth it! I wasn't crazy about the religious fanatics, but the rest of the book made up for the parts I wasn't so hot about. I really got attached to the characters, and I just loved Ed and his six shooters!!!
Can't wait for the next one!
After the first book, this really is disturbing about how the government responded to the original outbreak and created a quarantine zone that it allows no one out of regardless of the situation. Really disturbing but not surprising on the government sacrificing several individuals for the "greater good" Disturbing with the way that the nation is tending to lean now with the current government administration that is now in office. I am sure this was running through the authors mind when this was written.
Of course, the quarantine was broken by "dissidents" so you can figure out what happens after that. Add in a charismatic religious leader and a cult and you have a recipe for a really entertaining novel. Immediately bought the third book.
I did not much care for Dead City but you really don't need to read it to read Apocalypse of the Dead. I usually like a series to pick up right after the last one but I'll make an exception in this book. This book was such a good read, it had a lot of characters which can be overwhelming in some cases but not in this one. This story had the highs and lows the last one lacked...tension held at a peak is just too much and can actually numb you and seem dull. I loved all the unexpected situations, right when you thought you could guess what was going to happen out of nowhere comes a situation that totally makes sense and brings things full circle. It is hard to give a review as good as I want for this book without a spoiler but I hate ruining the book for the next reader so my best final statement would have to be READ THIS BOOK...YOU WILL REALLY ENJOY IT.
Prior to reading for some reason I had it in my mind that this book was following Eddie as the main character again (I bought the set all at once on a whim without reading a detailed description). I was pleasantly surprised to see that the books follows multiple new characters who start off with their own stories and eventually get tied together during the event. I enjoyed the first story following Eddie, I think this change prevented the second book from feeling like a repeat of the first. I found this book very engaging. Some of the characters' stories were more interesting than others, but all of it was entertaining. While some of the zombies were a little smarter than I traditionally prefer, it was nothing that put me off on the story. If you like the universe of the first book you will probably enjoy seeing how some of the world has changed as a result of the hurricane. Definitely worth picking up if you are into these types of novels.
