This book is quite simply outstandingly excellent. Joe Hnida has an obvious talent for creating a very readable book. I won't belabor the details of this story except that it's about Colfax Avenue and the Capitol Hill area of Denver and it's indigenous natives as they relate to amendment 20 in 2000 for medical marijuana and amendment 64 in 2012 for recreational marijuana. Because the folks who live around "Coldfax" in Denver are not often ordinary, conventional people legitimizing one of their favorite pastimes assisted an already interesting bunch of folks to fly flat over-the-top.
Mr. Hnida has created an interesting story around a very belivable cast of characters, all of whom are likable and very well conceived.
This book has so much going for it with contrasts between drama and humor and plenty of action and love interests that I could see a script developing out of this. Something featuring Denver instead of LA. What a concept....

The Taste Of Metal Joe Hnida 9781495397813 Books Reviews

This book not only takes right into the heart of Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood and the impact of the newly legalized marijuana industry, it also shows us just how devastating love can be when it's found too late. Jake's willingness to help an old friend because of a request from Dylan's wife, Ty, leaves Jake facing a questions of who he is and what he really wants from life.

While others will remark on the details of the marijuana industry, it is truly how well Hnida draws characters and draws you into their lives that stays with me (okay, yes, Rosie showed up in a dream). But Dylan's haunted and twisted philosophy that sets both Jake's nightmare and dream into motion is what lingers with me. And to read a book from a man that so deeply delves into his vision of love is unexpectedly.

But if you've never been Denver, the descriptions are almost a tour guide. I seriously believe you read Jake's descriptions and find your way down Colfax, from the gritty bars to LoDo's hipness all the way to the beautiful foothills.
Okay, I got to admit that if someone told me I would like a book about Denver's underside, about people who do, are addicted to and deal in drugs, I would say they are crazy. Yet, I was asked to read this, so I gave it a try. Much to my surprise and delight, I very much enjoyed it, and I was hooked by the story. But the best part of this book are the characters - and many of them are truly "characters". Hnida is very talented when it comes to letting us get to know about his people. There's Jake, the main guy whose head we spend a lot of time in. We know his weaknesses, his doubts, his motivations for doing what he does. Then there are those connected to drugs in various ways, such as the casual dabbler, the former heroin addict who is now "just" a pothead, and the serial addicts. All of them have their own codes as to what is okay for them to do, and it's interesting to watch them walk the fine line between addiction and "just having a good time."

Now even with this somewhat serious subject matter, it's important to know that the book has some humor, and it mostly has to do with Jake's observations on this brave new world he has entered. And the book isn't just about drugs it's about life, our expectations of ourselves, and our disappointments as we get older and find that things don't always turn out like we planned. I think a lot of 20- and 30-somethings might relate with this.

And I must add, the information on "bud" cultivation is fascinating. Who knew there were two main kinds of marijuana plants? I thought they all made you paranoid....But it will be interesting to watch Colorado, Washington state and the rest of the country deal with the inevitable legalization of pot.

I did not give the book it's 5th star because there are some parts screaming out for a good editor. I particularly thought the introduction was way too long and convoluted. But don't let this deter you the story is solid, the characters superior, and overall, reading this book was a great experience.
Having purchased this book almost a year ago, I've been struggling to find the right words to illustrate exactly how I felt about Hnida's debut novel. It was dark, and intense, and scarily close to home. But more than that, it was written in a style that portrays a multitude of feelings and experiences. Hnida found a way to evolve his writing to match that of the characters' current experiences and reactions. When a character was high, it was as if reading a script of your own mind while on the same drug. When a character was panicked, your own heartbeat began to race to match that. You felt the highs, you felt the lows.

More so than the writing style was the characters themselves. They were easily relateable, easily loveable, and just as easily detestable. There was life imbibed into each one. These were people that you already know in some fashion, or at the very least, people you want to get to know (Reed anyone?).

Finally, as a Denverite, I can fully appreciate all locations referenced in this book. I've lived in the heart of these neighborhoods. I've gone to these bars. I've been to those mountains! People, even Colorado Natives, forget that Colfax was truly the wickedest street in America, and those who do remember are always unsure why. I loved that this book showed a more seedy side to the Colfax that so many of us have learned to love in it's newly found yuppie glory.

I say, "Bravo," to Mr. Joe Hnida, and hurry up with our sequel man!
