Not a slam and not a joke. I wasn't sleeping so I thought, "What better book to read?" It kept me awake for four more nights and I've been sleeping well ever since. I'm a serious SK reader, picky about what of his is good or not, big Dark Tower fan, think The Stand is probably his best and It was the worst, yadda yadda, but this one is a page-turner. I cared about the characters and the politics, and King nails "Derry, Maine" down cold. I live about 150 miles from there and he knows that town, including the fact that there's *got* to be something living under a rock (or a tree) somewhere, because "Derry" is one strange burg, always has been.

What I like best about SK is that he writes as if he's talking with you, telling you a story instead of writing you a book. Sidebars and sidetracks and wanderings--we all do that when we tell stories, and I for one am glad his editors give him free rein. He's on my very short list of people I'd like to have a beer with (I know you quit, Steve; it's hypothetical), along with Mark Twain and Gilda Radner and John Steinbeck.

Don't quit writing, SK. You really are all that and a bag of chips.
